Samenvatting

This article assesses whether and why less-educated natives in post-industrial Dutch cities are less ethnocentric than in industrial ones as several theories in urban studies suggest. A multi-level analyses of the less-educated native working population (source: Cultural Change in the Netherlands Surveys 2004 and 2006) living in the 22 Dutch metropolitan agglomerations (sources: cbs Statline and Atlas of Municipalities 2004) confirms that they are indeed less ethnocentric in the most post-industrial cities. In accordance with the arguments of Richard Florida this pattern proves to be the result of the tolerant cultural climate in these cities, rather than the better labor market opportunities as proponents of the ethnic competition theory suggest.
